In La vie était belle, Sirine Fattouh filmed her father and his twin sister in 2005 in Beirut, as they recalled their memories of the city where they grew up. In their words, everything seemed better in the past; they appear stuck in that time, unable to reconcile with the reality of their contemporary lives, especially after fifteen years of civil war. Fattouh chose to translate only certain phrases rather than the entire dialogue, leaving the spectator suspended between understanding and distance.
