RITUELS
Series of 5 photographs, 2006
Nabatiyeh, Lebanon

Rituels is a serie of 5 photomontages.

The series of photographs of Rituels was taken in the south of Lebanon in the village of Nabatiyeh on the 13th of February 2006. The Shiite Muslim Community was commemorating by the Achoura the massacre of the Imam Husayn. The artist took these photographs while engaging her own body in the ceremony. The artist infiltrated between the men and walked with them to live more intensely the ultimate experience of this ritual. ‘The place was blood – drenched, the smell of blood mixed with sweat was more and more unbearable and the men while hitting themselves were shouting « Haïdar Haïdar Haïdar ». Sometimes when one of them would faint, the rescuers would immediately come. The women would watch proudly the parade of their men, their sons or their brothers.’

Fattouh played on the ability of these photographs to impact. Not wanting to exhibit the spectacular content of this ritual, she attempted to extract the characters of their real contexts so they were not limited to a system of representation but were in one of presentation.
